The Power of Purity: Embracing Chastity in a Modern World
Share
A virgin is someone who has never engaged in sexual intercourse. From a religious perspective, this is significant as it allows individuals to reserve sexual intimacy for a committed relationship like marriage. This decision can foster a deeper emotional connection, reduce the risk of emotional harm from casual encounters, and bring personal fulfillment through waiting.
Chastity cultivates self-respect, dignity, patience, and virtue. Striving to maintain sexual purity leads to clean thoughts, actions, and deeds. Many of today’s societal issues stem from the refusal to follow God’s word and live moral lives. Chastity is often viewed as outdated, but abandoning God's standards results in the rise of immorality and its negative consequences. Despite people failing to acknowledge it, God's judgment still prevails. Those who do not repent will ultimately face divine justice on Judgment Day.
Scripture provides guidance on maintaining purity while waiting for God's plan:
-
1 Corinthians 6:15–20 teaches that Christians must honor God with their bodies and avoid sexual immorality.
-
1 Corinthians 7:2–5 emphasizes marital faithfulness, instructing men and women to remain devoted to their spouses.
-
1 Thessalonians 4:3–4 states that it is God's will for people to abstain from sexual sin and live with honor.
-
Exodus 20:14 includes the commandment against adultery in the Ten Commandments.
-
Proverbs 5:3–5 warns about the dangers of sexual immorality.
-
Matthew 5:8 affirms that the pure in heart will see God.
The decline in moral values today is partly due to the loss of primary socialization, where parents and guardians fail to instill proper values in their children. When children are not raised with godly principles, they are more likely to adopt societal immorality. It is against God's will for parents to exploit their children for financial gain or encourage premarital sexual involvement.
A lack of reverence for God has led many families to disregard chastity, considering it outdated. However, rejecting God's plan contributes to family breakdowns, unplanned pregnancies, calls for abortion, increased sexually transmitted diseases, neglected children, low self-esteem, poverty, and the objectification of women. Every instruction from God is meant for our well-being, and disregarding His principles inevitably results in pain and regret. Temporary pleasures do not last, and no one who ignores God’s standards ultimately prospers. There are always consequences for wrongdoing.
Young people are encouraged to maintain their virginity, pursue education, develop skills, and build a strong relationship with Jesus Christ. Unlike animals, humans have souls created in God's image, and their lives should reflect that divine purpose. Marriage should be built on love, submission (women), trust, loyalty, responsibility, and commitment—not material gain or power. Couples who uphold God’s principles in marriage can overcome challenges together.
The joy and fulfillment of a honeymoon are most meaningful when shared with a spouse who is the only one to have experienced such intimacy with you. Waiting until marriage is truly worth it—you are valuable and special.
